Shopify Opens Billion-Product Catalog to More AI Agents
October 14, 2026
Read Original: Shopify Developer ChangelogShopify is widening access to AI-powered shopping with Shop MCP, a new connection that lets compatible AI agents search products, build carts and initiate Shop Pay checkout. The company announced the capability on October 13, describing access to more than one billion products in its catalog.
The update matters because shopping agents could become another route through which customers find online stores. Instead of browsing a conventional storefront from beginning to end, a shopper may ask an assistant to find items that meet specific requirements, compare options and prepare a purchase.
Shopify says Shop MCP offers tools for product discovery, product details, customer sign-in, cart creation and checkout. Its developer changelog states that search does not require an API key. Existing Catalog API integrations do not need to change as a result of the announcement.
The shopping flow still includes customer oversight. Shoppers connect their Shop account, and purchases require approval rather than allowing an agent to spend without consent. That distinction is important for trust, especially when an assistant is acting on budget, size or delivery preferences.
For merchants, the development puts renewed attention on accurate product information. Clear titles, descriptions, prices, availability and product attributes help both people and software agents understand what is being sold. Incomplete or inconsistent catalog data could make a product harder to match with a shopper's request.
AI shopping is still evolving, and the announcement does not guarantee additional sales for every merchant. But it shows how commerce platforms are preparing for a future in which storefront visits are only one part of product discovery. Retailers should watch how these channels develop while keeping their core product data reliable.
