IBM adds identity and access controls for enterprise AI agents
October 27, 2026
Read Original: IBMIBM announced new enterprise AI-agent controls at TechXchange on October 27. The portfolio brings together agent identity, credential management, discovery and evaluation, aiming to help organizations establish ownership and limit what agents can access.
IBM says HashiCorp Vault 2.2, Agent Identity and watsonx Orchestrate evaluation capabilities are generally available. Orchestrate discovery and containment remain in technology preview, while Secure Hub is in public preview. Agent Identity records an agent’s owner, status and authority; Vault supplies credential controls, including short-lived access. The announcement also describes integration with NVIDIA OpenShell. These are vendor-described capabilities, and the availability distinctions matter when planning a deployment.
JetherVerse takeaway: businesses should give an automated worker a clear identity before giving it another system’s password. A shared account makes it harder to distinguish ordinary staff activity from an assistant’s actions, especially when several workflows use the same connection.
A practical inventory can begin with five questions. Who owns this agent? What job does it perform? Which systems can it reach? Who can change its instructions? Who can stop it? The answers should be available to the people responsible for support, rather than living only with the person who first built the workflow.
Access should also reflect the particular task. An assistant preparing a customer summary may need permission to read selected records, but that does not automatically justify permission to delete them or change payment information. Teams can test the boundary by asking the assistant to attempt an action outside its assigned role and confirming that the connected system refuses it.
Finally, retirement needs a process. When a workflow is replaced or its owner leaves, remove its access and retain the records needed to explain its earlier activity. Otherwise an abandoned integration can remain active after people assume it has gone away.
