ASML Reportedly Explores Rival Chip Bonding Technology
October 17, 2026
Read Original: ReutersShares of BE Semiconductor Industries, commonly known as Besi, fell on October 16, 2026, after a research report suggested that ASML may be developing technology that could compete in hybrid bonding. Reuters reported the market reaction and the analysis, which examined ASML patent filings.
Hybrid bonding is a method used in advanced semiconductor packaging to connect components with extremely fine spacing. It is relevant to efforts to build faster and more efficient chips by stacking or closely integrating different semiconductor parts, including memory and processing components.
Besi is a prominent supplier in this specialised equipment market. The suggestion that a much larger semiconductor equipment company might enter the same field raised questions about future competition, even though patent activity does not prove that a commercial product is ready or will be launched.
The research firm SemiAnalysis reportedly reviewed 27 ASML patent filings that it viewed as evidence of interest in a potential competing technology. ASML did not confirm that it was launching a rival hybrid-bonding product. Its public comments instead pointed to its broader work on three-dimensional integration and advanced packaging.
This distinction is important. Companies frequently file patents covering possible future technologies, and some ideas never become products. Investors and customers should not treat a research interpretation as an official product announcement.
Advanced packaging has gained attention because chip performance improvements increasingly depend on how components are connected, not only on shrinking transistors. Equipment makers are investing in tools that support more complex chip structures as demand for high-performance computing grows.
For chip manufacturers, a new competitor could eventually influence equipment choice, production processes and supplier relationships. But any commercial effect would depend on demonstrated technical performance, customer qualification and manufacturing readiness.
The report illustrates how the semiconductor industry's competitive landscape is changing. Innovations in chip packaging are becoming as strategically significant as some traditional manufacturing steps, and even unconfirmed development signals can move markets.
